“Ladies and gentlemen this is your captain speaking….” If you’ve ever wanted to utter these words, your time has come! With all the new toy and commercial drones and gadgets abound this holiday season, it’s easier than ever for hobbyists to fly a miniature plane or copter. However, US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx makes it clear in a press release on December 14, 2015 that “unmanned aircraft enthusiasts are aviators, and with that title comes a great deal of responsibility.”
Before flying a new toy or commercial drone, learn the rules and regulations passed by the FAA. Many require registration, which began on Dec. 21. You can begin the registration process by visiting the FAA’s website at http://www.faa.gov/uas/registration/. Register by Jan. 20, 2016 and the FAA will waive the $5 fee.
If you need help with the registration process, staff at the library’s Tech Help desk can assist you. Tech Help hours are 12-8 PM, Monday-Thursday, and 11 AM-5 PM on Saturday. Staff can help you find additional information, but cannot provide advice on eligibility, specifications, or proper use.
