Internet Use

If you access and view inappropriate Internet sites you are violating the Behavior Policy. Your Internet use will be suspended for no less than 3 months.”Inappropriate sites” include but are not limited those that contain:

  • sexually graphic adult content
  • malicious or “hate” content
  • attempts to gain unauthorized access to any data, computer, or network
  • disclosure, use, or dissemination of personal information that could threaten or create vulnerability for a minor or any other person, or for the library
  • threats to the safety and security of minors when using mail, chat rooms, and other forms of direct electronic communication

The Zion-Benton Public Library District provides access to the Internet to supplement and enhance the informational resources in its collection. Access to the Internet is compatible with the library’s endorsement of the Library Bill of Rights, the Freedom to Read and the Freedom to View documents and with its materials selection policy.

The Internet allows users to connect to networks of resources outside the Library. While the Library offers links to a wide range of useful and interesting sites through its home page, all Internet sites are available. The Zion-Benton Public Library has no control over these resources nor does it have complete knowledge of what is on the Internet. Information may be reliable and current or it may be inaccurate, out-of-date, or unavailable at times. Some content may be controversial or offensive. The Library firmly believes that the valuable information and interaction available on this worldwide network outweighs the possibility that users may come across material that is inconsistent with the goals of the Library.

The Library provides Internet access equally to all users. Parents have the primary responsibility to guide and direct their child’s use of the Internet. Parents are strongly encouraged to discuss use of the Internet with their child and to supervise their child’s Internet sessions.

The Library expects patrons to use the Internet in a responsible manner. Users may not use the Internet for any illegal activity or place any materials on the Internet related to any illegal activity. It is the responsibility of the user to respect copyright laws and licensing agreements and to assume responsibility for payment of fees for any fee-based service. Failure to do so will result in the loss of Internet or Library privileges and may be subject to prosecution by local, state and federal authorities.

The Zion-Benton Public Library administration will develop rules and procedures necessary to insure the fair and reasonable use of the Internet.
